Urgent Care in General Practice

Overview
The Department of Health has selected the Primary Care Foundation carry out a national review of how general practice manages urgent care. The aim is to understand how practices manage same day care, to identify best practice for the future and to prepare a toolkit that will support its delivery.
Nationally, there has been an increasing focus on urgent and emergency care, but most attention has been given to diverting patients away from A&E and hospital care rather than looking at how patients might be identified and treated earlier in general practice. This project will explore what practical steps practices can take which could improve care to patients and reduce pressure on the wider healthcare system.
There are three key stages to this work:
• Assessing the current process in 5 PCTs across the Country
• Identifying 10 pilot practices to test out new ways of working
• Identifying what works best within general practice to improve same day care
Progress
The 5 PCTs have been recruited and surveys of practices have been carried out.
The PCT areas are:
Doncaster
Lambeth
Plymouth
Bolton
Norfolk
We have recruited the pilot practices and the detailed work is under way in each practice.
Best practice
We have received a brilliant response from practices all over the country.
There is still time to contribute
We want to know about current good practice in managing same day care – whether this involves easy access, rapid assessment, new ways of responding to urgent needs or working creatively with other agencies. We are particularly keen to hear from practices who have found new ways of addressing urgent needs for patients in hard to reach communities. We would like to hear from any general practice on a dedicated phone line 07594 357484 or by email to goodpractice@primarycarefoundation.co.uk
